2. Real-Life Financial Problems

Problem 1 – Birthday Party
You want to have a birthday party for 12 friends. Snacks cost $45, drinks cost $18, and decorations cost $22. You have $70 saved. Your parents will pay half of the total cost. Do you have enough money?
Total cost = $85
Parents pay $42.50
You need to pay $42.50
You have $70 → Yes, you have enough!
Problem 2 – Buying a New Bike
A bike costs $189. It is on sale for 25% off. HST is 13%. How much will you pay in total?
Discount = 25% of 189 = $47.25
Sale price = $141.75
HST = 13% of 141.75 ≈ $18.43
Total = $160.18
Problem 3 – Best Buy
You need 2 litres of milk.
Option A: 1L for $2.49
Option B: 2L for $4.69
Which is the better buy?
Option A = $2.49 per litre
Option B = $2.345 per litre
Option B is better
