Smart Shopper: Best Buys!

Comparing Prices & Finding the Best Deal
With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❤️

Hi my clever Grade 6 bargain hunters! 👋

Today we learn how to be smart shoppers! We’ll compare prices and use Unit Price to find the real best buy — not just what looks cheapest!

🛒💰🔍

1. What is Unit Price?

Unit Price = Price ÷ Quantity

Unit price tells you the cost for one item or per 100g, per litre, etc.

2. Let’s Compare!

Juice Option A: 1.5 L for $4.49
Unit Price = $4.49 ÷ 1.5 = $2.99 per litre
Juice Option B: 2 L for $5.79
Unit Price = $5.79 ÷ 2 = $2.895 per litre

Option B is the better buy! 💰

3. Let’s Practice Together! 🛒

Question 1

Cereal A: 500g for $3.99
Cereal B: 750g for $5.49
Which is the better buy?

Cereal A: $7.98 per kg
Cereal B: $7.32 per kg
Cereal B is better!

Question 2

A big bag of chips (400g) costs $4.80. A small bag (150g) costs $2.10. Which is cheaper per gram?

Big bag: 1.2¢ per gram
Small bag: 1.4¢ per gram
Big bag is better value

Challenge

You have $10. Which is the smarter buy?
• 2 L juice for $3.49
• 4 L juice for $6.99

4 L juice = $1.75 per litre
2 L juice = $1.745 per litre
2 L is slightly better per litre, but 4 L gives more total juice!
