Calculating Sales Tax!

HST & GST in Canada
With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❀️

Hi my smart Grade 6 shoppers! πŸ‘‹

In Canada we pay sales tax on most things we buy. Some provinces use GST (5%) and some use HST (combined tax). In Ontario we pay 13% HST. Today we’ll learn how to calculate it easily!

πŸ›’πŸ’°πŸ“‹

1. Sales Tax in Canada

Item: Headphones
Price: $39.99
HST 13%: $5.20
Total: $45.19

2. Easy Way to Calculate Tax

Tax = Price Γ— Tax Rate

Total = Price + Tax

Example: A toy costs $25.00. HST is 13%.
Tax = 25 Γ— 0.13 = $3.25
Total = 25 + 3.25 = $28.25

3. Let’s Practice Together! πŸ›’

Question 1

A book costs $18.00. HST is 13%. How much tax do you pay? What is the total?

Tax = $2.34
Total = $20.34 ⭐

Question 2

A pair of shoes costs $65.00 before tax. Calculate the HST (13%) and the final price.

4. In Real Canadian Life πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

β€’ Almost everything you buy in stores has HST/GST
β€’ Restaurants add tax to your bill
β€’ Online shopping also includes tax
β€’ Some items like groceries (basic food) and books may have lower or no tax

You are now a Tax Calculation Pro! 🌟

Fantastic job! You can now calculate sales tax and total prices like a real shopper.

Next time you go shopping, try calculating the tax before the cashier tells you the total!

Love and proud high-fives,
