Spot the Trick!

Misleading Graphs & Biased Data
With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❀️

Hi my clever Grade 6 truth detectors! πŸ‘‹

Not all graphs tell the truth! Some graphs are made to trick us or push a certain idea. Today we become Graph Detectives and learn how to spot misleading graphs and biased data.

πŸ”πŸ“‰πŸš«

1. Common Ways Graphs Trick Us

Trick #1: Stretched or Squished Scales
The vertical axis starts at 90 instead of 0 β†’ makes small differences look HUGE!
Trick #2: Missing Labels or Titles
No title, no units, no legend β†’ we don’t know what we’re looking at!
Trick #3: Cherry Picking Data
Only showing data that supports one idea and hiding the rest.

2. Good Graph vs Misleading Graph

βœ… Honest Graph

Y-axis starts at 0
Clear labels
All data shown

❌ Misleading Graph

Y-axis starts at 80
No labels
Only part of data shown

3. Let’s Spot the Tricks! πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ

Question 1

A graph shows ice cream sales β€œdoubling” but the Y-axis starts at 800 instead of 0. Is this fair?

No! It makes the change look much bigger than it really is. ⭐

Question 2

A company only shows data from their best month and hides the bad months. What is this called?

Cherry Picking or Biased Data ⭐

Question 3

What should you always check before believing a graph?

Title, labels, scale, and whether all data is shown ⭐

4. Detective Tips to Stay Safe

βœ… Always check if the Y-axis starts at zero
βœ… Read titles and labels carefully
βœ… Ask: β€œIs this showing all the data or just part of it?”
βœ… Think: β€œWho made this graph and why?”

5. In Real Canadian Life πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

β€’ Advertisements that make products look better than they are
β€’ News graphs during elections
β€’ Social media posts with tricky charts
β€’ Company reports about profits

You are now a Graph Detective! 🌟

Great work! You can now spot misleading graphs and biased data.

Always be a critical thinker β€” don’t believe every graph you see!

Love and super proud high-fives,
Mrs. Brenda ❀️
