Primary vs Secondary Data!

Two Ways to Gather Information
With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❀️

Hi my curious Grade 6 data detectives! πŸ‘‹

Today we’re learning about two important types of data: Primary Data and Secondary Data.

Understanding the difference helps us become better researchers and thinkers!

πŸ”πŸ“Š

1. Primary Data vs Secondary Data

🟣 Primary Data

Data you collect yourself!

  • You design the survey
  • You ask the questions
  • You do the experiment
  • You count or measure

Examples:
β€’ Surveying your classmates about favourite sports
β€’ Measuring how long it takes friends to run 100m

πŸ”΅ Secondary Data

Data someone else collected

  • Already exists
  • Found in books, websites, reports
  • Used by many people

Examples:
β€’ Population of Canada from Statistics Canada
β€’ Weather records from Environment Canada

2. Advantages & Disadvantages

Primary Data Secondary Data
Advantages Up-to-date, exactly what you need Fast, cheap, lots of information
Disadvantages Takes time and effort May be old or not exactly what you need

3. Let’s Practice Together! πŸŽ‰

Question 1

You ask your friends what their favourite video game is. Is this primary or secondary data?

Primary Data
You collected it yourself! ⭐

Question 2

You look up the population of Toronto on the Statistics Canada website. Is this primary or secondary data?

Secondary Data
Someone else collected it ⭐

Question 3

When is it better to use primary data instead of secondary data?

When you need very specific or up-to-date information ⭐

4. In Real Canadian Life πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

β€’ Scientists collecting temperature data in the Arctic = Primary
β€’ Students using census data for a project = Secondary
β€’ Hockey teams tracking player statistics = Primary
β€’ News reports using government data = Secondary

You are now a Data Expert! 🌟

Wonderful job! You understand the difference between primary and secondary data and when to use each.

Try collecting some primary data from your family this week!

Love and curious high-fives,
Mrs. Brenda ❀️
