Hi my brilliant Grade 6 problem solvers! 👋

Today we put all our measurement skills together to solve real-life problems! We’ll use length, perimeter, area, volume, mass, and capacity to help with shopping, building, cooking, and planning — just like grown-ups do every day in Canada.

1. How to Solve Measurement Problems

  1. Read the question carefully
  2. Decide which measurement you need (length, area, volume…)
  3. Choose the right formula
  4. Convert units if needed
  5. Calculate and check your answer makes sense

2. Real-World Problems

Problem 1 – Painting a Room
Your bedroom walls need painting. Two walls are 4 m long and 2.5 m high. The other two walls are 3 m long and 2.5 m high. How much wall area needs painting? (Don’t paint the floor or ceiling!)
Area of long walls: 2 × (4 × 2.5) = 20 m²
Area of short walls: 2 × (3 × 2.5) = 15 m²
Total = 35 m²
Problem 2 – Buying Juice for a Party
You need 9 litres of juice for the class party. Each bottle holds 1.5 litres. How many bottles should you buy?
9 ÷ 1.5 = 6 bottles
Problem 3 – Garden Fence
You want to build a rectangular garden 8 m long and 5 m wide. How much fencing do you need? If fencing costs $12 per metre, how much will it cost?
Perimeter = 2 × (8 + 5) = 26 metres
Cost = 26 × 12 = $312
Problem 4 – Moving Box
A moving box is 60 cm long, 40 cm wide, and 30 cm high. What is its volume in cubic centimetres? How many litres of water would it hold?
Volume = 60 × 40 × 30 = 72,000 cm³
72,000 cm³ = 72 litres

A soccer field is 110 m long and 75 m wide. What is its area?

8,250 m²

Practice 2

You have 2.5 kg of flour. A cookie recipe needs 450 g per batch. How many batches can you make?

2500 g ÷ 450 g = 5 full batches (with some left over) ⭐
