Today we’re learning how to find the Surface Area using Nets! A net is the flat pattern you get when you unfold a 3D shape. To find surface area, we simply calculate the area of every face in the net and add them together. It’s like laying out all the wrapping paper flat before folding it around a gift!

2. How to Find Surface Area Using a Net

Surface Area = Area of Face 1 + Area of Face 2 + ... + Area of Face 6

For a rectangular prism, we can use the shortcut:
SA = 2(lw + lh + wh)

3. Step-by-Step Example

Box dimensions: Length 8 cm, Width 5 cm, Height 4 cm

Using the net method:

  • 2 faces (top & bottom): 8 × 5 = 40 cm² each → 80 cm ²
  • 2 faces (front & back): 8 × 4 = 32 cm² each → 64 cm²
  • 2 faces (sides): 5 × 4 = 20 cm² each → 40 cm²

Total Surface Area = 80 + 64 + 40 = 184 cm²

A cube has edges of 6 cm. What is its surface area using the net?

216 cm²
6 faces × (6×6) = 6 × 36 = 216 ⭐

Question 2

A rectangular prism has length 10 cm, width 6 cm, height 5 cm. Find the surface area.

280 cm²
2(10×6 + 10×5 + 6×5) = 2(60+50+30) = 2×140 = 280 ⭐

Why is using a net a good way to find surface area?
