Today we’re becoming experts at converting length units in the metric system: millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m), and kilometres (km). These are the units we use every day in Canada!

1. Metric Length Units

2. Easy Conversion Rules

To go from bigger to smaller unit: Multiply
To go from smaller to bigger unit: Divide

Remember: km → m → cm → mm
×1000 ×100 ×10

3. Step-by-Step Examples

Example 1: 2.5 km = ? m
2.5 × 1000 = 2500 metres

Example 2: 450 cm = ? m
450 ÷ 100 = 4.5 metres

Example 3: 8000 mm = ? cm
8000 ÷ 10 = 800 centimetres
