Classifying Triangles by Sides & Angles
With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda β€οΈ
Today we become Triangle Detectives! We will learn how to classify triangles in two important ways: by their sides and by their angles. Every triangle is special and belongs to different groups. Letβs investigate together! π
Equilateral Triangle
All 3 sides equal
All angles are 60Β°
Isosceles Triangle
2 sides equal
2 angles equal
Scalene Triangle
All sides different
All angles different
All 3 angles are less than 90Β° (sharp angles)
One angle is exactly 90Β° (square corner)
One angle is more than 90Β° (wide angle)
Examples:
Question 1
A triangle has sides 5 cm, 5 cm, and 5 cm. What kind is it?
Question 2
A triangle has angles 40Β°, 60Β°, and 80Β°. Classify by angles.
Question 3
A triangle has sides 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm and one 90Β° angle. What is it?
β’ Roof shapes of houses
β’ Road signs (yield sign is equilateral!)
β’ Bridges and trusses
β’ Sailing boats and hockey rink markings
Great work today! You can now look at any triangle and tell exactly what kind it is.
Keep your eyes open β triangles are everywhere!
Love and big high-fives,
Mrs. Brenda β€οΈ
