Solving One-Step Equations

With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❤️

Hi my super Grade 6 equation solvers! 🌟

Today we’re learning how to solve one-step equations! It’s like finding the missing piece of a puzzle. We use inverse operations (opposite operations) to get the variable alone. You already know addition/subtraction and multiplication/division — now we’ll use them to solve equations! Let’s go! 🔍

1. The Golden Rule

Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other side to keep it balanced!

2. Addition & Subtraction Equations

Example 1: x + 7 = 15

Subtract 7 from both sides:
x + 7 - 7 = 15 - 7
x = 8
Example 2: y - 4 = 11

Add 4 to both sides:
y = 11 + 4 = 15

3. Multiplication & Division Equations

Example 1: 3x = 24

Divide both sides by 3:
x = 24 ÷ 3 = 8
Example 2: n ÷ 5 = 6

Multiply both sides by 5:
n = 6 × 5 = 30

4. Let’s Practice Together! 🎉

Question 1:

x + 9 = 17

x = 17 - 9 = 8

Question 2:

y - 6 = 12

y = 12 + 6 = 18

Question 3:

4x = 28

x = 28 ÷ 4 = 7

Question 4:

n ÷ 3 = 10

n = 10 × 3 = 30

Question 5 (Real Life):

You bought some pencils for $3 each. The total cost was $21. How many pencils did you buy? (Let x = number of pencils)

3x = 21 → x = 21 ÷ 3 = 7 pencils
