Writing Pattern Rules

With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❀️

Hi my brilliant Grade 6 pattern masters! 🌟

Now that we can spot and extend patterns, it’s time to learn how to write clear pattern rules! A good rule tells someone exactly how to get from one number (or shape) to the next. This is a very important algebra skill. Let’s practice writing excellent rules together! πŸ“

1. What is a Pattern Rule?

A pattern rule is a clear sentence that describes how the pattern changes.

Pattern: 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, ...
Rule: Start at 4 and add 3 each time
Pattern: 2, 6, 18, 54, ...
Rule: Start at 2 and multiply by 3 each time
Pattern: 50, 45, 40, 35, ...
Rule: Start at 50 and subtract 5 each time

2. Rules for Input-Output Tables

Input β†’ Output
1 β†’ 7
2 β†’ 10
3 β†’ 13
4 β†’ 16

Rule: Multiply the input by 3 and then add 4

3. Let’s Practice Together! πŸŽ‰

Question 1:

Pattern: 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, ...
Write the pattern rule.

Start at 5 and add 4 each time ⭐

Question 2:

Pattern: 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, ...
Write the pattern rule.

Start at 3 and multiply by 2 each time ⭐

Question 3:

Input: 1, 2, 3, 4 β†’ Output: 8, 11, 14, 17
Write the rule.

Multiply the input by 3 and add 5 ⭐

Question 4:

Pattern: 100, 90, 80, 70, ...
Write the pattern rule.

Start at 100 and subtract 10 each time ⭐

Question 5 (Real Life):

A plant is 12 cm tall and grows 3 cm every week. Write a rule to find the height after any number of weeks.

Height = 12 + (3 Γ— number of weeks) ⭐
