Percent Problem Solving
in Real Life

With your kind teacher Mrs. Brenda ❤️

Hi my smart Grade 6 shoppers and thinkers! 🌟

Now that you know how to find 10%, 25%, 50%, and 75%, let’s use percents to solve real-life problems! We’ll practice discounts, sales tax, tips, and more — just like grown-ups do every day. You’re going to be amazing at this! 🛒💰

1. Problem Solving Steps

1. Read the question carefully
2. Decide: Is it “percent of”, discount, tax, or tip?
3. Calculate the percent
4. Add or subtract if needed
5. Check: Does my answer make sense?

2. Real-Life Examples

Example 1 – Discount
A $80 hoodie is 25% off. How much do you pay?

25% of 80 = 20
80 - 20 = $60
Example 2 – Sales Tax (HST)
A book costs $40. HST is 13%. What is the total price?

10% of 40 = 4
3% of 40 = 1.20
Tax = $5.20
Total = $45.20
Example 3 – Tip
A meal costs $45. You want to leave a 15% tip.

10% = 4.50  5% = 2.25
Tip = $6.75

3. Let’s Practice Together! 🎉

Question 1:

A $120 pair of skates is on sale for 25% off. How much is the discount?

25% of 120 = $30

Question 2:

A video game costs $50. Add 13% HST. What is the total price?

10% = $5  3% = $1.50  Tax = $6.50
Total = $56.50

Question 3:

You eat at a restaurant and the bill is $35. You want to leave a 15% tip. How much is the tip?

10% = $3.50  5% = $1.75 → $5.25

Question 4:

A sweater originally costs $60. It is on sale for 30% off. How much do you pay?

30% of 60 = $18
$60 - $18 = $42

Question 5 (Real Life):

Your family eats out and the bill is $85. You want to leave a 20% tip. How much tip should you leave?

10% = $8.50  Another 10% = $8.50 → $17.00
