Today we’re becoming experts at writing and simplifying ratios! A ratio is a comparison between two quantities. We’ll learn how to write them clearly and make them simpler — just like we simplify fractions. Let’s have fun comparing things! 🔍

1. What is a Ratio?

A ratio compares two numbers. It tells us “for every ___ of this, there are ___ of that.”

Ways to Write a Ratio:

• 3 to 5 → 3:5
• 3 out of 5 → 3/5

Example: 8 boys and 6 girls in a group → ratio of boys to girls is 8:6

2. How to Simplify a Ratio

Just like fractions — divide both numbers by their Greatest Common Factor (GCF).

Example 1: Simplify 12:18

GCF of 12 and 18 is 6
12 ÷ 6 = 2 18 ÷ 6 = 3
→ 2:3

Example 2: Simplify 15:25

GCF = 5 → 3:5

A recipe uses 8 cups of flour and 2 cups of sugar. Write the ratio of flour to sugar in simplest form.

Simplify the ratio 24:36.

Question 5 (Real Life):

In a class of 24 students, 18 like hockey and 6 like basketball. Write the ratio of hockey fans to basketball fans in simplest form.

18:6 = 3:1 ⭐

Recipes: 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar = 2:1
Sports: 5 goals to 3 assists = 5:3
Shopping: 3 packs of cookies for $12 = 1:4 (dollars per pack)
