Today we’re learning about ratios and rates — two super useful ways to compare numbers! Ratios help us compare parts, and rates help us compare things that change (like speed or price). You see them every day in recipes, sports, and shopping. Let’s explore together! 🚀

1. What is a Ratio?

A ratio compares two quantities. It tells us “how many of this compared to how many of that.”

Examples:

• There are 3 boys and 5 girls → ratio of boys to girls is 3:5
• 2 red cars to 6 blue cars → 2:6 = 1:3
• 7 apples to 4 oranges → 7:4

2. What is a Rate?

A rate is a special ratio that compares two different kinds of units (like kilometres per hour).

Examples of Rates:

• 60 km in 1 hour → 60 km/h
• $4 for 2 litres → $2 per litre
• 3 cookies in 1 minute → 3 cookies/minute

3. Unit Rates (The Best Kind!)

A unit rate has “1” as the second number. It tells us “per one”.

Example: You drove 240 km in 3 hours.
240 ÷ 3 = 80 km per 1 hour → 80 km/h

Question 5 (Real Life):

You can buy 3 hockey pucks for $12. What is the unit rate (price per puck)?

$12 ÷ 3 = $4 per puck ⭐
