Two Ways to Tell Time

Grade 5 Ontario Math πŸ“š β€’ Measurement

Hello my wonderful Grade 5 superstar! πŸ‘‹

I'm Kashef and today we're learning about 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clocks! The 12-hour clock uses AM and PM. The 24-hour clock goes from 00:00 to 23:59 and is used in schedules, trains, and computers. Ready to master both? Let’s go! πŸš€

πŸ•’ 12-Hour vs 24-Hour

12-Hour Clock
1:00 a.m. β€” 12:00 noon β€” 1:00 p.m. β€” 11:59 p.m.
24-Hour Clock
01:00 β€” 12:00 β€” 13:00 β€” 23:59

πŸ”„ How to Convert

From 12-hour to 24-hour:

  • AM times: same as 12-hour (but 12:00 a.m. = 00:00)
  • PM times: add 12 to the hour (3:30 p.m. = 15:30)

From 24-hour to 12-hour:

  • 00:00 – 11:59 = a.m.
  • 12:00 – 23:59 = p.m. (subtract 12 from the hour)

🎯 Let’s Practice!

1. 7:45 p.m. in 24-hour time?

19:45

2. 14:30 in 12-hour time?

2:30 p.m.

3. School starts at 08:50. What time is that on a 12-hour clock?

8:50 a.m.
