Many-Sided Shapes

Grade 5 Ontario Math πŸ“š β€’ Geometry & Spatial Sense

Hello my wonderful Grade 5 superstar! πŸ‘‹

I'm Kashef and today we're learning about Polygons! "Poly" means many and "gon" means angle. A polygon is a closed shape made with straight lines. Triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons and more are all polygons! Ready to explore many-sided shapes? Let’s go! πŸš€

🧠 What is a Polygon?

A closed shape with straight sides. It must be flat (2D) and have no gaps or crossing lines.

  • βœ… Triangle (3 sides)
  • βœ… Quadrilateral (4 sides)
  • βœ… Pentagon (5 sides)
  • βœ… Hexagon (6 sides)

πŸ”’ Types of Polygons

Regular Polygon β€” All sides equal, all angles equal

Regular Pentagon

Irregular Polygon β€” Sides and angles can be different

By Number of Sides:

  • 3 sides = Triangle
  • 4 sides = Quadrilateral
  • 5 sides = Pentagon
  • 6 sides = Hexagon
  • 8 sides = Octagon

🎯 Let’s Identify Polygons!

1. A closed shape with 5 straight sides is a...

Pentagon

2. Is a circle a polygon? Why or why not?

No β€” a circle has a curved side, not straight lines

3. Name a regular polygon with 4 sides.

Square
