Hello my wonderful Grade 5 superstar! π
I'm Kashef and today we're learning about Stem-and-Leaf Plots! Theyβre a clever way to organize numbers so we can see the shape of the data. The βstemβ is the tens digit and the βleafβ is the ones digit. Itβs like a plant with stems and leaves! Ready to grow some data? Letβs go! π
π§ What is a Stem-and-Leaf Plot?
The stem is the tens place. The leaves are the ones digits listed in order.
2 | 1 3 4 7
3 | 0 2 5 5 8
4 | 1 6
This shows the numbers: 21, 23, 24, 27, 30, 32, 35, 35, 38, 41, 46
βοΈ How to Make a Stem-and-Leaf Plot
- Write all numbers in order
- Choose the stem (tens digit)
- Write the leaves (ones digits) in order next to each stem
- Add a key: 2 | 3 = 23
π― Letβs Build Stem-and-Leaf Plots!
1. Test scores: 72, 85, 68, 79, 91, 84, 77
7 | 2 7 9
8 | 4 5
9 | 1
Key: 6|8 = 68
2. How many numbers are in the 80s?
π Real-Life Stem-and-Leaf
Problem 1: Ages of students in a club: 10, 11, 9, 12, 10, 11, 13, 9, 11. Make a stem-and-leaf plot and find the most common age.
1 | 0 0 1 1 1 2 3
Most common age: 11
