Hello my wonderful Grade 5 superstar! π
I'm Kashef and today we're exploring the x-axis and y-axis! They are like two special roads on a map that help us find any point on a grid. This is called the coordinate plane. Ready for a treasure hunt on the grid? Letβs go! π
π§ What are the x-axis and y-axis?
x-axis β Horizontal line (left and right). Like the floor.
y-axis β Vertical line (up and down). Like a wall.
They cross at the origin (0,0).
π How to Read (x,y)
The first number is always x (across).
The second number is always y (up).
Example: (3,4) means go 3 right, then 4 up.
Point B: (4,1)
Point C: (-3,2)
π― Letβs Identify Points!
1. Go 5 right and 3 up. What is the coordinate?
2. Go 0 right and 4 up. What point is this?
3. Which axis is the point (7, 0) on?
πΊοΈ Real-Life Uses
Maps use coordinates to find treasure!
Video games use (x,y) to move characters.
Graphs show how temperature changes over time.
π§ͺ Quick x-axis and y-axis Quiz
Question: In the point (6,2), which number tells us how far up we go?
You are a Coordinate Plane Expert! ππ₯³
Kashef is super proud of you! You now understand the x-axis and y-axis.
This is how we plot points and make graphs in algebra and beyond!
