Hello my amazing Grade 5 superstar! π
I'm Kashef and today weβre learning how to compare and order big whole numbers! Weβll use symbols like <, >, and = and put numbers from smallest to biggest. Youβre going to be a Comparing Champion! Ready? Letβs go! π
π§ How to Compare Whole Numbers
Start from the left (biggest place value) and compare digit by digit until you find a difference!
Symbols we use:
Example 1: Compare 45,678 and 45,687
Next digit: 7 vs 8 β 7 < 8
So 45,678 is less than 45,687 β
Example 2: Compare 123,450 and 123,405
Tens place: 5 vs 0 β 5 > 0
So 123,450 is greater β
π Ordering Whole Numbers
Put numbers from smallest to largest (ascending) or largest to smallest (descending).
Example: Order these numbers from smallest to largest:
Correct order: 65,432 < 67,890 < 68,100
Then thousands: 5, 7, 8 β 5 is smallest, then 7, then 8
π― Letβs Practice!
1. Which is greater? 98,765 or 98,756
2. Order from smallest to largest: 45,678 45,687 45,600
