🧠 What is Expanded Form?

Expanded Form shows the value of each digit by writing it as a sum. We break the number into its place values!

Example:

45,678

40,000 + 5,000 + 600 + 70 + 8

This means: 4 ten-thousands + 5 thousands + 6 hundreds + 7 tens + 8 ones

✍️ How to Write Expanded Form

Example 1: Write 56,789 in expanded form.

Answer: 50,000 + 6,000 + 700 + 80 + 9

5 → 50,000 (ten thousands)
6 → 6,000 (thousands)
7 → 700 (hundreds)
8 → 80 (tens)
9 → 9 (ones)
Add them up: 50,000 + 6,000 + 700 + 80 + 9

Example 2: Write 123,456 in expanded form.

Answer: 100,000 + 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6

1 → 100,000
2 → 20,000
3 → 3,000
4 → 400
5 → 50
6 → 6

Example 3: Write 300,000 in expanded form.

Answer: 300,000
