🌟 Geometry – Translations 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we are learning about **Translations**! A translation is when we **slide** a shape to a new position without rotating it or flipping it.

➑️ What is a Translation?

Translation means moving a shape by sliding it left, right, up, or down. The shape stays exactly the same β€” only its position changes.

It is like sliding a book across a table or moving a hockey puck on the ice.

πŸ“ How to Describe a Translation

We describe a translation by saying:

Example:

Move the shape 4 units right and 2 units up
This is written as: (4, 2)

πŸ—ΊοΈ Translations on a Coordinate Grid

Original Point: (2, 3)

Translate 5 units right and 1 unit up β†’ New point: (7, 4)

Every point moves the same way!

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1: Describe the Translation

1. A shape moves from (1,1) to (6,1) β†’ 5 units right
2. A shape moves from (3,4) to (3,8) β†’ 4 units up
3. A shape moves from (2,2) to (5,5) β†’ 3 right and 3 up
Practice 2: Apply the Translation

1. Point (4,2) translated 3 units right and 2 units up β†’ (7,4)
2. Point (1,5) translated 4 units left β†’ (-3,5)
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. A hockey puck is at position (2,3) on the ice grid. It slides 6 units right. What is its new position?
(8,3)

2. You draw a triangle at (1,1), (1,4), (4,1). You translate it 5 units right. What are the new coordinates?
(6,1), (6,4), (9,1)
Challenge Question

If you translate a shape 4 units right and then 3 units left, what is the total translation?
1 unit right

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now understand Translations (slides) very well! This is one of the three main transformations in Grade 4.

I am so proud of you. Try sliding objects on your desk or drawing shapes and translating them on paper!

πŸ’• You are smart. You are kind. You can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (Reflections, Rotations, or anything else) and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
