⏰ What is Elapsed Time?

Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes from the **start time** to the **end time**.

Example: If school starts at 8:45 and ends at 3:15, how much time has passed?

✅ 1. When Hours Are the Same

Start: 9:20 a.m.
End: 9:55 a.m.

55 − 20 = 35 minutes

🔄 2. When Time Crosses an Hour

Start: 2:45 p.m.
End: 4:10 p.m.

Step 1: From 2:45 to 3:00 = 15 minutes
Step 2: From 3:00 to 4:00 = 1 hour
Step 3: From 4:00 to 4:10 = 10 minutes

Total: 1 hour 25 minutes

Practice 1: Simple Elapsed Time

1. From 10:15 to 10:40 → 25 minutes
2. From 7:30 to 8:05 → 35 minutes

Practice 2: Longer Times

1. From 9:20 a.m. to 11:05 a.m. → 1 hour 45 minutes
2. From 2:45 p.m. to 5:10 p.m. → 2 hours 25 minutes

Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. The hockey game started at 4:30 p.m. and ended at 6:15 p.m. How long was the game?
1 hour 45 minutes

2. You started reading at 3:20 p.m. and finished the chapter at 4:05 p.m. How long did you read?
45 minutes

Challenge Question

School starts at 8:45 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. How long is the school day?
6 hours 45 minutes

Always count the minutes to the next hour first
Then add the full hours
Finally add the remaining minutes
You can also use a number line or a clock to help count
