Today we are learning about **Mass** using grams and kilograms. This is how we measure how heavy things are!

βš–οΈ What is Mass?

Mass tells us how heavy something is. In Canada, we use the metric system:

Gram (g) β†’ used for light objects
Kilogram (kg) β†’ used for heavier objects

1 kilogram = 1,000 grams

Examples of grams:

β€’ A paperclip β‰ˆ 1 gram
β€’ A small apple β‰ˆ 100–150 grams
β€’ A slice of bread β‰ˆ 30 grams
β€’ A chocolate bar β‰ˆ 50 grams

🐘 Kilograms (kg) – For Heavier Things

Examples of kilograms:

β€’ A bag of sugar = 2 kg
β€’ A big watermelon β‰ˆ 5–8 kg
β€’ Your school backpack β‰ˆ 4–7 kg
β€’ An average Grade 4 student β‰ˆ 25–35 kg

To change grams to kilograms β†’ divide by 1,000
To change kilograms to grams β†’ multiply by 1,000
2,500 grams = 2.5 kg
3.5 kg = 3,500 grams
750 grams = 0.75 kg

Challenge Question

Your school bag is 4.2 kg and your lunch box is 650 grams. What is the total mass?
4.2 kg + 0.65 kg = 4.85 kg
