π What is a Metre?
A **metre (m)** is the basic unit of length in the metric system. It is about the height of a kitchen counter or the length of a big step.
Important Relationships:
1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm)
1 metre (m) = 1,000 millimetres (mm)
1,000 metres (m) = 1 kilometre (km)
π Real-Life Examples of Metres
β’ Height of a door β 2 metres
β’ Length of a bed β 2 metres
β’ Width of a classroom β 8β10 metres
β’ Height of a basketball hoop β 3 metres
β’ Length of a small car β 4β5 metres
β’ Your own height (probably between 1 and 1.5 metres)
π οΈ How Do We Measure in Metres?
We use:
- A metre stick (exactly 1 metre long)
- A measuring tape (longer distances)
- Big steps (1 big step is roughly 1 metre)
Tip: When measuring long things, we can use multiple metre sticks or count how many big steps it takes.
βοΈ Letβs Practice Together, My Dear Student!
