🌟 Adding Simple Fractions 🌟

Today we are learning how to add fractions! Adding fractions is like adding pieces of a pizza — we just need to make sure the pieces are the same size first.

➕ When Can We Add Fractions?

The easiest way is when the fractions have the **same denominator** (bottom number). Then we only add the numerators (top numbers).

✅ Adding Fractions with Same Denominator

Example 1:

1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4

(1 + 2 = 3, denominator stays 4)
Example 2:

3/5 + 1/5 = 4/5
Rule: When denominators are the same, just add the numerators and keep the same denominator.

🔄 Adding Fractions with Different Denominators

We first make the denominators the same by finding equivalent fractions.

Example: 1/2 + 1/4

Change 1/2 to 2/4 (multiply top and bottom by 2)

2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4
Example: 2/3 + 1/6

Change 2/3 to 4/6
4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6

1. 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4
2. 2/3 + 1/6 = 5/6
3. 3/4 + 1/8 = 7/8
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. You drank 1/3 of a bottle of water in the morning and 1/6 more in the afternoon. What fraction of the bottle did you drink?
1/3 + 1/6 = 2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6 = 1/2

2. A hockey practice is 1 hour long. You spent 3/4 of the time skating and 1/8 of the time doing drills. What fraction of the practice did you spend on these two activities?
3/4 + 1/8 = 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8
Challenge Question

3/5 + 1/4 = 12/20 + 5/20 = 17/20
