🌟 Equivalent Fractions 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we are learning **Equivalent Fractions** β€” fractions that look different but have the exact same value!

🍰 What are Equivalent Fractions?

Equivalent Fractions are different ways of writing the **same amount**.

They may look different, but they are equal β€” just like different names for the same friend!

1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8

🎨 See It With Pictures

Imagine a chocolate bar divided into 2 equal parts.
You eat 1 part β†’ 1/2

Now imagine the same chocolate bar divided into 4 equal parts.
You eat 2 parts β†’ 2/4

Both show the same amount!

✨ How to Find Equivalent Fractions

Multiply (or divide) the numerator and denominator by the **same number**.

Example:
Start with 1/3
Multiply top and bottom by 2 β†’ 2/6
Multiply top and bottom by 3 β†’ 3/9
Multiply top and bottom by 4 β†’ 4/12

So 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1: Find the Missing Number

1. 1/2 = __/8 β†’ 4/8
2. 2/3 = 4/__ β†’ 6
3. 3/5 = __/10 β†’ 6/10
Practice 2: Are They Equivalent?

1. 2/4 and 3/6 β†’ Yes
2. 1/3 and 3/9 β†’ Yes
3. 2/5 and 4/10 β†’ Yes
4. 1/2 and 3/5 β†’ No
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. You ate 2/6 of a pizza. Your friend says you ate 1/3. Are you both correct?
Yes β€” 2/6 = 1/3 (equivalent fractions)

2. A hockey game is 60 minutes. You practiced for 20 minutes. What fraction of the game is that? Write two equivalent fractions.
20/60 = 1/3 = 2/6
Challenge Question

Write three fractions equivalent to 3/4.
6/8, 9/12, 12/16

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now understand Equivalent Fractions very well! This skill helps us compare fractions and add them later.

I am so proud of you for learning fractions step by step. Keep practising by finding different names for the same fraction.

πŸ’• You are smart. You are kind. You can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (Comparing Fractions, Adding Simple Fractions, or anything else) and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
