🌟 Mixed Numbers 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we are learning **Mixed Numbers**! A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction. It’s how we usually talk about numbers bigger than 1 in real life.

🍫 What is a Mixed Number?

A **Mixed Number** has two parts:

Whole Number + Proper Fraction

It shows a number that is more than one whole but not a full next whole.

Examples:

1 1/2  2 3/4  3 2/5  5 1/3

πŸ“Š What Does It Mean?

2 3/4 means:

2 whole pizzas + 3 more slices out of 4 slices

(You ate two full pizzas and three quarters of another pizza!)

πŸ”„ How to Change Between Them

Improper Fraction β†’ Mixed Number
Divide numerator by denominator β†’ whole number + remainder over denominator
11/4 β†’ Mixed Number
11 Γ· 4 = 2 with remainder 3
So 2 3/4
Mixed Number β†’ Improper Fraction
(Whole number Γ— denominator) + numerator / denominator
3 2/5 β†’ Improper Fraction
3 Γ— 5 = 15
15 + 2 = 17
So 17/5

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1: Improper to Mixed

1. 7/3 = 2 1/3
2. 15/4 = 3 3/4
3. 23/5 = 4 3/5
Practice 2: Mixed to Improper

1. 4 1/2 = 9/2
2. 2 3/5 = 13/5
3. 5 3/4 = 23/4
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. You walked 11 quarters of a kilometre. Write this as a mixed number.
11/4 = 2 3/4 kilometres

2. A recipe needs 17/6 cups of flour. Write this as a mixed number.
17/6 = 2 5/6 cups
Challenge Question

Change 29/8 to a mixed number.
3 5/8

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now know Proper Fractions, Improper Fractions, and Mixed Numbers! You are becoming a fractions expert.

Mixed numbers are how we usually talk in real life β€” β€œI ate two and a half pizzas!”

I am so proud of you for working so hard. Keep practising changing between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

πŸ’• You are smart. You are kind. You can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (Equivalent Fractions, Comparing Fractions, Adding Fractions, or anything else) and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
