Great job learning Proper Fractions! Now we are moving to **Improper Fractions**. These are bigger and very useful!

🍕🍕 What is an Improper Fraction?

An Improper Fraction is a fraction where the numerator is bigger than or equal to the denominator.

That means the fraction is **1 or more than 1 whole**.

5/3  7/4  9/5  8/8

📊 How to Understand Improper Fractions

Example: 5/3

5 pieces of pizza when each pizza is cut into 3 slices.

That means: 1 whole pizza + 2 slices left over

5/3 = 1 2/3 (Mixed Number)

🔄 How to Change Improper Fraction to Mixed Number

  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
  2. The answer is the whole number.
  3. The remainder becomes the new numerator.
  4. The denominator stays the same.
Example: 11 ÷ 4
4 goes into 11 two times (4 × 2 = 8)
Remainder = 11 - 8 = 3
So 11/4 = 2 3/4

Practice 2: Change Mixed Number to Improper Fraction

1. 3 1/4 = 13/4 (3×4 + 1 = 13)
2. 2 3/5 = 13/5
3. 4 2/3 = 14/3
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. You ate 7 slices of pizza. Each pizza has 4 slices. What improper fraction of pizza did you eat?
7/4 = 1 3/4 pizzas

2. A hockey practice is 60 minutes long. You practiced for 75 minutes. What improper fraction of a practice did you do?
75/60 = 5/4 = 1 1/4
