🌟 Fractions and Decimals 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we begin a new and exciting part: Fractions and Decimals! We start with Proper Fractions.

πŸ• What is a Fraction?

A fraction tells us about a part of a whole. It has two numbers:

Numerator / Denominator

Numerator = how many parts we have
Denominator = how many equal parts the whole is divided into

βœ… Proper Fractions

A Proper Fraction is a fraction that is less than 1 whole.

The numerator is smaller than the denominator.

Examples of Proper Fractions:

1/2  3/4  2/5  5/8  7/10
Visual Meaning:
β€’ 1/2 = one half of a pizza
β€’ 3/4 = three quarters of a chocolate bar
β€’ 2/5 = two out of five equal parts

πŸ“Š Understanding Proper Fractions

1/3 β†’ 1 part out of 3 equal parts
4/5 β†’ 4 parts out of 5 equal parts (almost one whole!)
5/12 β†’ 5 parts out of 12 equal parts

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1: Is it a Proper Fraction?

1. 3/4 β†’ Yes (proper)
2. 7/5 β†’ No (improper β€” greater than 1)
3. 2/9 β†’ Yes
4. 8/8 β†’ No (equals 1 whole)
Practice 2: Write a Proper Fraction

1. Three out of five apples β†’ 3/5
2. Six out of ten cookies β†’ 6/10
3. One out of four quarters β†’ 1/4
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. You ate 2 slices out of 8 slices of pizza. What proper fraction did you eat?
2/8

2. A hockey game is divided into 3 equal periods. Your favourite team played really well in 2 periods. What proper fraction of the game did they play well?
2/3
Challenge Question

Write three different proper fractions that are equal to less than 1/2.
Example answers: 1/3, 2/5, 3/7

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now understand Proper Fractions very well! These are fractions that are smaller than one whole β€” the most common type we use every day.

I am so proud of you for starting the Fractions unit so strongly. Next we will learn about improper fractions and mixed numbers.

πŸ’• You are smart. You are kind. You can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (Improper Fractions, Equivalent Fractions, or anything else) and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
