🌟 Remainders 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we are learning about **Remainders** in division. Sometimes when we divide, there is a little bit left over. That’s called a remainder!

πŸͺ What is a Remainder?

When we divide and the number doesn’t divide evenly, we have some left over. That leftover amount is called the **remainder**.

We write the remainder with the letter **R**.

🌟 Let’s See Examples

Example 1: 13 Γ· 4

4 goes into 13 three times (4 Γ— 3 = 12)
13 βˆ’ 12 = 1 left over

13 Γ· 4 = 3 R 1
Example 2: 25 Γ· 6

6 goes into 25 four times (6 Γ— 4 = 24)
25 βˆ’ 24 = 1 left over

25 Γ· 6 = 4 R 1
Example 3 (Bigger Number): 87 Γ· 5

5 goes into 87 seventeen times (5 Γ— 17 = 85)
87 βˆ’ 85 = 2 left over

87 Γ· 5 = 17 R 2

πŸ“ Remainders in Long Division

When you do long division, if you cannot divide anymore and there is still a number left, that is your remainder.

Long Division Example: 96 Γ· 7

7 ) 96
  13
7 ) 96
  -7  (7 Γ— 1 = 7)
  ——
  26
  -21 (7 Γ— 3 = 21)
  ——
  5 ← Remainder 5

Answer: 13 R 5

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1

1. 17 Γ· 5 = 3 R 2
2. 43 Γ· 6 = 7 R 1
3. 58 Γ· 8 = 7 R 2
Practice 2: Long Division with Remainder

1. 75 Γ· 4 = 18 R 3
2. 134 Γ· 5 = 26 R 4
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. 29 students want to ride in vans. Each van holds 6 students. How many vans are needed and how many students are left without a full van?
29 Γ· 6 = 4 vans with 5 students left over (4 R 5)

2. You have 85 stickers and want to put 9 stickers on each page of your album. How many full pages can you make and how many stickers will be left?
85 Γ· 9 = 9 pages with 4 stickers left (9 R 4)
Challenge Question

167 Γ· 8 = 20 R 7

🌍 Remainders in Real Life

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now understand remainders perfectly! Sometimes there is a little bit left over β€” and that’s okay. We just write it as R.

I am so proud of how well you are learning division. You are becoming a real division expert!

πŸ’• Keep practising and remember: You are smart. You are kind. You can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
