🌟 Long Division Introduction 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we start learning Long Division! This is a very important skill in Canadian Grade 4 math. We will go slowly and step by step so you feel confident.

βž— What is Long Division?

Long Division is a step-by-step method to divide bigger numbers (2-digit, 3-digit, or more) by a 1-digit number. It helps us divide when the numbers are too big to do in our head.

We use four easy steps: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down

πŸ“‹ The Four Steps (D M S B)

  1. Divide β€” How many times does the divisor go into the first part of the dividend?
  2. Multiply β€” Multiply your answer by the divisor.
  3. Subtract β€” Subtract the product from the current number.
  4. Bring Down β€” Bring down the next digit and repeat the steps.

🌟 Example 1: 84 ÷ 4

Step by step:

4 ) 84
  21  ← Answer on top
4 ) 84
  -8  ← 4 Γ— 2 = 8
  ——
  04
  -4  ← 4 Γ— 1 = 4
  ——
  0

Answer: 21

🌟 Example 2: 96 ÷ 6

6 ) 96
  16
6 ) 96
  -6  (6 Γ— 1 = 6)
  ——
  36
  -36 (6 Γ— 6 = 36)
  ——
  0

Answer: 16

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1

1. 75 Γ· 5 = 15
2. 68 Γ· 4 = 17
3. 92 Γ· 4 = 23
Practice 2

1. 84 Γ· 7 = 12
2. 135 Γ· 5 = 27
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. A hockey team scored 96 points in 6 games. How many points per game?
96 Γ· 6 = 16 points per game

2. There are 85 stickers. Put them equally into 5 bags. How many stickers in each bag?
85 Γ· 5 = 17 stickers per bag
Challenge Question

112 Γ· 8 = 14

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You have taken your first big steps into Long Division! This is a very important skill that you will use more and more in Grade 4.

Remember: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down. Practise slowly and carefully β€” you are doing wonderfully!

πŸ’• I am so proud of you. You are becoming a strong and confident mathematician.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (Remainders, or anything else from the syllabus) and I will create another beautiful lesson just for you!
