Today we are learning the special rules (properties) of multiplication. These rules help us solve problems faster and smarter!

✨ What are Properties?

Properties are like magic rules that are always true for multiplication. They help us understand how numbers work together.

πŸ”„ 1. Commutative Property

The order of the numbers doesn’t matter. The answer is the same!

3 Γ— 5 = 15
5 Γ— 3 = 15

Just like: 3 groups of 5 = 5 groups of 3

🀝 2. Associative Property

You can group the numbers differently and the answer stays the same.

(2 Γ— 3) Γ— 4 = 6 Γ— 4 = 24
2 Γ— (3 Γ— 4) = 2 Γ— 12 = 24

The parentheses ( ) show different grouping, but the answer is always 24!

🎁 3. Distributive Property (Most Important!)

You can break apart one number and multiply separately, then add the results.

6 Γ— 7 = 6 Γ— (5 + 2) = (6Γ—5) + (6Γ—2) = 30 + 12 = 42

This property helps us multiply bigger numbers using facts we already know!

0️⃣ 1️⃣ 4. Identity Property & 5. Zero Property

Identity Property: Any number multiplied by 1 stays the same.
8 Γ— 1 = 8  45 Γ— 1 = 45
Zero Property: Any number multiplied by 0 is 0.
9 Γ— 0 = 0  756 Γ— 0 = 0

Practice 1: Name the Property

1. 4 Γ— 9 = 9 Γ— 4 β†’ Commutative Property
2. 3 Γ— (5 Γ— 2) = (3 Γ— 5) Γ— 2 β†’ Associative Property
3. 7 Γ— 8 = 7 Γ— (4 + 4) = (7Γ—4) + (7Γ—4) β†’ Distributive Property
Practice 2: Use Distributive Property

1. 6 Γ— 9 = 6 Γ— (10 - 1) = (6Γ—10) - (6Γ—1) = 54
2. 8 Γ— 12 = 8 Γ— (10 + 2) = (8Γ—10) + (8Γ—2) = 96
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. There are 7 boxes. Each box has 24 crayons. How many crayons?
Use distributive: 7 Γ— 24 = 7 Γ— (20 + 4) = 140 + 28 = 168 crayons

2. A school bus has 9 rows with 4 seats each. How many seats?
9 Γ— 4 = 36 seats (use commutative if you want!)
