Today we are learning how to show multiplication using pictures! Arrays and Equal Groups make multiplication easy to see and understand.

🟦 What are Equal Groups?

Equal Groups means putting things into groups that are the same size. Multiplication is a fast way to count equal groups.

Example: 5 groups of 4 apples = 5 Γ— 4 = 20 apples

An Array is a picture made with rows and columns of objects (like dots or squares). It shows multiplication perfectly!

Important:
You can read an array as:
Rows Γ— Columns OR Columns Γ— Rows
3 Γ— 4 = 12 and 4 Γ— 3 = 12 (they are the same!)

Example 1:
4 rows of 6 stars
4 Γ— 6 = 24
Example 2:
An array with 5 rows and 7 columns
5 Γ— 7 = 35
Example 3 (Bigger):
8 groups of 9 hockey pucks
8 Γ— 9 = 72

Practice 2: Draw or Describe the Array

1. Show 4 Γ— 9 with an array β†’ 4 rows of 9
2. Show 6 Γ— 7 β†’ 6 rows of 7 or 7 rows of 6
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)

1. There are 5 shelves in a library. Each shelf has 8 books. How many books are there?
5 Γ— 8 = 40 books

2. A hockey team has 9 players. They have 6 teams playing. How many players in total?
9 Γ— 6 = 54 players

Draw an array for 7 Γ— 8 and write the answer.
7 rows of 8 = 56
