🌟 Multi-Digit Addition 🌟

Today we are learning how to add big numbers (up to 4 and 5 digits) with and without regrouping. This is a very important skill in Canadian Grade 4 math!

➕ What is Multi-Digit Addition?

In Grade 4 we add numbers with 3, 4, or 5 digits. We always write the numbers in columns, lining up the place values (Ones, Tens, Hundreds, etc.).

Sometimes we need to regroup (carry) when the sum in a column is 10 or more.

🌟 Addition Without Regrouping (Easy Start)

Example: 3,456 + 2,123

3,456
+ 2,123

5,579

Answer: 5,579

🔄 Addition With Regrouping (Carrying)

Important Rule: When the sum in any column is 10 or more, write the ones digit and carry 1 to the next column on the left.
Example 1: 4,785 + 2,368

4,785
+ 2,368

7,153

Step-by-step:
Ones: 5 + 8 = 13 → write 3, carry 1
Tens: 8 + 6 + 1 = 15 → write 5, carry 1
Hundreds: 7 + 3 + 1 = 11 → write 1, carry 1
Thousands: 4 + 2 + 1 = 7
Answer: 7,153

Example 2 (Bigger Numbers): 28,456 + 13,789

Answer: 42,245

📏 Estimation Before Adding

Good mathematicians always estimate first!

Round to nearest hundred: 4,800 + 2,400 = 7,200
