🎯 What is Rounding?
Rounding means changing a number to a nicer, easier number that is close to the original. We round when we don’t need the exact number — like when we estimate how many people are in a room or how much something costs.
In Grade 4 we round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, and 10,000.
📏 The Golden Rounding Rule
Look at the digit to the RIGHT of the place you are rounding to.
• If it is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 → Round DOWN (stay the same)
• If it is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 → Round UP (add 1 to the rounding place)
🔟 Rounding to the Nearest 10
Example 1: Round 47 to the nearest 10
Look at the ones digit (7). 7 is 5 or bigger → Round UP
47 → 50
Example 2: Round 23 to the nearest 10
Ones digit is 3 → Round DOWN
23 → 20
💯 Rounding to the Nearest 100
Example: Round 456 to the nearest 100
Look at the tens digit (5) → 5 or bigger → Round UP
456 → 500
Another: Round 3,249 to the nearest 100
Tens digit is 4 → Round DOWN
3,249 → 3,200
🏆 Rounding to the Nearest 1,000 and 10,000
To Nearest 1,000:
7,682 → Look at hundreds digit (6) → Round UP → 8,000
12,345 → Hundreds digit (3) → Round DOWN → 12,000
To Nearest 10,000:
48,725 → Look at thousands digit (8) → Round UP → 50,000
23,456 → Thousands digit (3) → Round DOWN → 20,000

• “There are about 8,000 people at the fair” (rounded from 7,892)
• “The toy costs about $50” (rounded from $47.89)
