🌟 Expanded Form 🌟

Hello my dear student! I am Miss Brenda, your kind and caring Grade 4 math teacher πŸ’•

Today we are going to learn how to stretch numbers like a big rubber band! This is called Expanded Form and it helps us really understand the value of every digit.

πŸ“ What is Expanded Form?

Expanded Form is a way of writing a number that shows the value of each digit separately. It helps us see how much each digit is really worth because of its place.

Remember: Each place is 10 times bigger than the place to its right!

πŸ”’ Let’s Stretch a Number!

48,725
Standard Form: 48,725

Expanded Form:
40,000 + 8,000 + 700 + 20 + 5

Why?
β€’ 4 is in the ten thousands place β†’ 4 Γ— 10,000 = 40,000
β€’ 8 is in the thousands place β†’ 8 Γ— 1,000 = 8,000
β€’ 7 is in the hundreds place β†’ 7 Γ— 100 = 700
β€’ 2 is in the tens place β†’ 2 Γ— 10 = 20
β€’ 5 is in the ones place β†’ 5 Γ— 1 = 5

✨ More Examples

1. 23,456
Expanded Form: 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6
2. 67,809
Expanded Form: 60,000 + 7,000 + 800 + 0 + 9
(We can also write 9 only, without + 0)
3. 100,000
Expanded Form: 100,000
4. 9,008
Expanded Form: 9,000 + 0 + 0 + 8 or simply 9,000 + 8

πŸ› οΈ Steps to Write Expanded Form

  1. Write the number with commas to see the places clearly.
  2. Starting from the left, multiply each digit by its place value.
  3. Add all the results with + signs.

✏️ Let’s Practice Together, My Dear Student!

Practice 1: Write in Expanded Form

1. 35,672 β†’ 30,000 + 5,000 + 600 + 70 + 2

2. 14,007 β†’ 10,000 + 4,000 + 0 + 0 + 7 or 10,000 + 4,000 + 7

3. 80,905 β†’ 80,000 + 900 + 5
Practice 2: Write the Standard Form from Expanded Form

1. 40,000 + 3,000 + 200 + 80 + 1 = 43,281

2. 70,000 + 800 + 50 = 70,850

3. 100,000 + 5,000 + 600 = 105,600
Practice 3: Mixed Practice

1. Write 56,789 in expanded form: 50,000 + 6,000 + 700 + 80 + 9

2. What number is 20,000 + 9,000 + 300 + 40 + 5? 29,345
Challenge Question

Use the digits 1, 4, 7, 8, 0 to make the biggest number possible.
Biggest number: 87,410
Expanded Form: 80,000 + 7,000 + 400 + 10

🌟 Why is Expanded Form Important?

It helps you understand place value better. When you add or subtract big numbers later, you will use this thinking to carry or borrow correctly. You are building a strong foundation!

Fantastic Job, My Dear Student! πŸŽ‰

You now know how to stretch any number into Expanded Form. This is a very important skill in Grade 4 math.

I am so proud of you for learning with me today. Practice writing a few numbers in expanded form every day β€” you will get faster and smarter!

πŸ’• Remember: You are smart, you are kind, and you can do hard things.

When you are ready, tell me the next topic (for example: Rounding Numbers, Addition, or anything else) and I will make another beautiful lesson just for you!
