π What Does Comparing Mean?
Comparing numbers means deciding which number is bigger, smaller, or if they are equal.
We use these symbols:
> means greater than (bigger)
< means less than (smaller)
= means equal to (same)
π How to Compare Two Numbers
Always start from the left side (the highest place value) and compare digit by digit.
Step-by-Step Rule:
- Line up the numbers by place value (use commas!)
- Start from the leftmost digit
- The first place where digits are different decides which number is bigger
- If all digits are the same, the numbers are equal
Example 1:
Compare 34,567 and 34,592
34,567
34,592
Same: 34,
Different at hundreds place: 5 < 9
So 34,567 < 34,592
Example 2:
Compare 78,910 and 78,901
Same until tens place: 1 > 0
So 78,910 > 78,901

π Ordering Numbers
Ordering means putting numbers from smallest to biggest (Ascending) or biggest to smallest (Descending).
Example β Ascending Order (smallest to biggest):

Correct order: 8,945 β 15,205 β 15,230 β 27,500
Example β Descending Order (biggest to smallest):
42,100 41,999 50,000 39,875
Correct order: 50,000 β 42,100 β 41,999 β 39,875
