π Reading Graphs
When reading a graph, always check:
- The title
- What the bars, pictures, or dots mean
- The numbers on the sides (scale)
- Which category has the most or least
Example Bar Graph: Favourite Canadian Sports
Hockey: ββββββββββ (20 students)
Soccer: βββββ (10 students)
Basketball: βββ (6 students)

We compare to see differences and similarities.
Comparison Examples:
β’ Hockey is liked by 20 students, Soccer by 10 β Hockey is twice as popular
β’ 20 - 10 = 10 more students like Hockey than Soccer

After reading and comparing, we ask: βWhat story does the data tell us?β
Example Interpretation:
Most students like Hockey best. We could plan a hockey day for the class!

In a bar graph, Summer has 15 students and Winter has 8. How many more students prefer Summer?
15 - 8 = 7 more students
Practice 2: Comparing Data

Which colour is the most popular? How many more votes than the least popular?
Red is most popular. 12 - 5 = 7 more votes
Practice 3: Interpreting Results (Canadian Style)
A survey shows: 18 students like hockey, 9 like soccer, 4 like basketball.
What can we learn from this data?
Most students like hockey best. The class could organize a hockey game or watch a game together.
Challenge Question
A pictograph shows favourite snacks: Apples (8 symbols), Bananas (5 symbols), Grapes (3 symbols). Each symbol = 2 students.
1. How many students like apples? 16
2. How many more like apples than grapes? 10
3. What does this tell us? Apples are the most popular snack.
