🔢 What is Number Sense?

Number Sense is understanding numbers — how to read them, write them, compare them, and feel comfortable with them. Today we focus on Reading and Writing Numbers up to 10,000 and even bigger!

In Grade 4, we work with numbers like 5,678 or 23,450. These are called whole numbers.

🏠 Understanding Place Value

Every digit in a number has a special job depending on its place. This is called Place Value.

Let’s look at the number 8,765

Thousands	Hundreds	Tens	Ones
8	7	6	5
8,000	700	60	5

So 8,765 = 8 thousands + 7 hundreds + 6 tens + 5 ones

📖 How to Read Big Numbers

When we read a number, we read it in groups of three digits from the right.

23,456

Twenty-three thousand, four hundred fifty-six

Helpful Rules:

Look at the commas. They separate thousands.
Read the numbers before the comma first, then say “thousand”.
Then read the last three digits normally.
Never say “and” when reading whole numbers.

More Examples:

• 4,892 → Four thousand, eight hundred ninety-two
• 10,000 → Ten thousand
• 67,305 → Sixty-seven thousand, three hundred five
• 125,780 → One hundred twenty-five thousand, seven hundred eighty

We can write numbers in three important ways:

1. Standard Form (the easiest to read)
8,765 2. Word Form (how we say it)
Eight thousand, seven hundred sixty-five 3. Expanded Form (showing the value of each digit)
8,000 + 700 + 60 + 5
