⚖️ What is an Equation?
An equation is like a balance scale. The left side must equal the right side.
7 + 5 = 12 ✓
n + 3 = 10 ← We need to find n
⚖️ Keeping the Scale Balanced
Whatever we do to one side of the equation, we must do to the other side too!
Example:
n + 6 = 15
Subtract 6 from both sides → n = 9

1. A number plus 9 equals 22. What is the number?
n + 9 = 22 → n = 13
2. 36 divided by a number equals 6.
36 ÷ m = 6 → m = 6
Practice 3: Word Problems (Canadian Style)
1. You have some hockey stickers. After buying 7 more, you have 25 stickers. How many did you start with? Let s = starting stickers.
s + 7 = 25 → s = 18
2. A hockey team scored 3 times as many goals as last game. They scored 21 goals this game. How many goals did they score last game? Let g = goals last game.
3 × g = 21 → g = 7
Challenge Question
You think of a number, add 5, then multiply by 2, and the answer is 26. What is the number? Let n = the number.
(n + 5) × 2 = 26 → n + 5 = 13 → n = 8
