🧱 Concrete Graphs - Real Objects Make Graphs! 🧱

Super Fun Lesson for Grade 1 Friends!
Ontario Curriculum - Concrete Graphs

πŸ“Œ Learning Goals 🎯

Hello my wonderful Grade 1 superstars! ❀️

Today we will learn:
β€’ What a concrete graph is (a real-object graph)
β€’ How to make a graph using actual objects (blocks, toys, cubes…)
β€’ How to read and understand our concrete graphs
β€’ How to compare groups and answer questions
β€’ Why concrete graphs help us see data clearly

1. What is a Concrete Graph? 🧱

A **concrete graph** is a graph made with **real objects** instead of pictures or numbers.

We line up or stack real things (like linking cubes, toys, or blocks) to show information.

2. Let's Make a Concrete Graph! πŸ“Š

Our Favourite Colour Graph

We use real coloured cubes:

Red: πŸŸ₯ πŸŸ₯ πŸŸ₯ πŸŸ₯ πŸŸ₯ πŸŸ₯ (6)

Blue: 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 (8)

Green: 🟩 🟩 🟩 🟩 (4)

Yellow: 🟨 🟨 🟨 (3)

Blue has the most cubes β†’ Most students like blue!

3. More Concrete Graph Examples 🧸

How We Come to School

We use real toy cars, buses, and walking figures:

Walk: πŸ‘Ÿ πŸ‘Ÿ πŸ‘Ÿ πŸ‘Ÿ πŸ‘Ÿ (5)

Bus: 🚌 🚌 🚌 🚌 (4)

Car: πŸš— πŸš— πŸš— (3)

Our Pets

We use small animal toys:

Dogs: 🐢 🐢 🐢 🐢 🐢 🐢 (6)

Cats: 🐱 🐱 🐱 🐱 (4)

Fish: 🐠 🐠 (2)

4. How to Read a Concrete Graph πŸ”

1. Look at what the graph is about (title)
2. Look at each group of objects
3. Count how many objects are in each group
4. Compare: Which group has the most? The least?
5. Ask questions: β€œHow many children walk to school?”

5. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Use linking cubes to make a concrete graph of favourite colours.
  • Use small toys to show how we come to school.
  • Sort and graph the types of shoes in the classroom.
  • Make a graph of favourite snacks using real snack boxes or pictures.
  • Build a concrete graph with blocks and ask your friend questions about it.
  • Compare two groups: β€œWhich pile has more cubes?”

6. You Are a Graph Builder! πŸ†

Congratulations my dear Grade 1 friend!

You now know how to make and read concrete graphs using real objects!

You are a real data scientist and graph builder! 🌟
