Hello my wonderful Grade 1 superstars! ❤️

Today we will learn:
• What data is (information we collect)
• How to sort objects by one rule (colour, size, shape, type)
• How to count and organize sorted groups
• How to use tally marks to count quickly
• To ask simple questions about our data

1. What is Data? 📋

Data is information we collect about something.

Examples:
• Our favourite colours
• How many boys and girls in class
• Types of pets we have
• Colours of our shoes

2. Sorting Data 🗂️

Sort by colour:
Red group Blue group Green group Yellow group

Sort by size:
Big toys Medium toys Small toys

Sort by type:
Animals Fruits Toys Vehicles

3. Counting and Organizing 🔢

We sorted our class favourite colours:

Red: 8 Blue: 12 Green: 5 Yellow: 7

Blue is the most popular colour!

We counted pets:
Dogs: 9 Cats: 6 Fish: 4 Birds: 2

4. Using Tally Marks 📌

Tally marks help us count quickly:

Example: Favourite fruit

5. Asking Questions About Data ❓

Which colour do most students like?
How many children have dogs?
Which pet is the least common?

6. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Sort classroom objects by colour, size or shape and count each group.
  • Do a class survey: “What is your favourite fruit?” and make tally marks.
  • Sort your toys or snacks and tell how many in each group.
  • Make a simple picture chart with stickers or drawings.
  • Play “Data Detective” — ask questions about the sorted groups.
  • Collect data about shoes in class (colour, type, size) and organize it.
