📌 Learning Goals 🎯

Hello my wonderful Grade 1 superstars! ❤️

Today we will learn:
• How to describe shapes using sides and corners
• How to sort and group shapes
• What makes shapes the same or different
• How to find shapes in our world
• To compose (make) bigger shapes using smaller ones

1. Describing Shapes 🗣️

Triangle
• 3 sides
• 3 corners (vertices)
• Can be different sizes but always 3 sides

Square
• 4 equal sides
• 4 corners
• All sides are the same length

Rectangle
• 4 sides
• 4 corners
• 2 long sides and 2 short sides

Circle
• 0 straight sides
• 0 corners
• Round and smooth all around

2. Sorting Shapes 🗂️

Sort by number of sides:

3 sides → Triangles
4 sides → Squares & Rectangles
5 sides → Pentagons
6 sides → Hexagons

Sort by number of corners:

3 corners, 4 corners, 5 corners, 6 corners

Sort by size: Small shapes and big shapes

3. Same or Different? 🔍

Two squares can be different sizes but they are still squares because they have 4 equal sides and 4 corners.

A square and a rectangle both have 4 sides and 4 corners, but a square has all sides equal while a rectangle has 2 long and 2 short sides.

4. Making New Shapes (Composing) 🧩

Two triangles can make a bigger triangle or a square.

A square + two triangles can make a house.

Many small shapes can make a big picture (like a robot or a flower).

5. Shapes in Our World 🌍

Look around!
• Windows = rectangles
• Wheels = circles
• Stop signs = octagons (8 sides)
• Honeycomb = hexagons
• Pizza slices = triangles

6. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Go on a shape hunt in the classroom or at home.
  • Sort pattern blocks or cut-out shapes by number of sides.
  • Build pictures using only triangles, squares, and circles.
  • Draw a robot or house using different 2-D shapes.
  • Play “What shape am I?” — describe a shape and let friends guess.
  • Use geoboards or sticks to make different shapes.
