Today we will learn:
• What mass means (how heavy something is)
• How to measure mass using non-standard units (cubes, beans, blocks)
• Compare which object is heavier or lighter
• Use words like heavy, light, heavier, lighter, same
• Have fun weighing things like real scientists!

1. What is Mass? ⚖️

Mass tells us how heavy something is.

We can feel it when we pick things up or use a balance scale.

Heavy things are hard to lift.
Light things are easy to lift.

2. Heavy vs Light 🐘 vs 🦋

Heavy objects: A big rock, a chair, a watermelon 🍉

Light objects: A feather, a paper, a cotton ball 🪶

Same mass: Two identical books or two same-size blocks

3. Measuring Mass with Non-Standard Units 🟦

Example 1: How heavy is my pencil case?

It takes 12 linking cubes to balance my pencil case.

Example 2: Which is heavier?

A big book or a small toy car?

The big book is heavier — it needs more cubes to balance!

Example 3: My lunch box is as heavy as 25 cubes.

4. Using a Balance Scale ⚖️

We put the object on one side.
We put cubes (or beans, or blocks) on the other side until it balances.

When it balances → We found the mass!

5. Comparing Mass 🔍

The apple is lighter than the orange.
Apple = 8 cubes
Orange = 12 cubes
Orange is heavier.

My school bag is heavier than my lunch box.
School bag needs more cubes to balance.

6. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Use a balance scale (or make one with a ruler and cups) to weigh classroom objects.
  • Find 5 heavy things and 5 light things in the classroom.
  • Measure how many cubes your shoe, book, or toy weighs.
  • Play “Heavier or Lighter?” game with a partner.
  • Sort objects into groups: heavy, light, and medium.
  • Weigh fruits or snacks and see which is the heaviest.
