Today we will learn:
• What non-standard units are
• How to measure length using cubes, paper clips, hands, feet, and other objects
• Why we need to measure the same way every time
• How to compare lengths of different objects
• To explain our measurements clearly

1. What are Non-Standard Units? 🧱

Non-standard units are things we use to measure that are not a ruler or tape measure.

Examples we can use:
🟦 Linking cubes 📎 Paper clips 👟 Shoes ✋ Hand spans 🦶 Foot steps 🍎 Apples

2. Let's Measure Length! 📏

How long is your desk?

My desk is 10 cubes long!

How long is your favourite book?

The book is 7 paper clips long.

How tall are you?

I am 6 shoes tall!

3. Important Rule: Use the Same Unit! ⚠️

If you measure your pencil with cubes today, you must use cubes again tomorrow.

Why? So your measurement is fair and the same every time!

4. Comparing Lengths 🔍

The teacher’s desk is longer than my desk.
Teacher’s desk = 15 cubes
My desk = 10 cubes
15 > 10 → Teacher’s desk is longer!

My shoe is shorter than dad’s shoe.
My shoe = 8 paper clips
Dad’s shoe = 12 paper clips

5. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Measure your desk, chair, book, and pencil using linking cubes.
  • Measure how many footsteps it takes to walk across the classroom.
  • Use paper clips to measure the length of your arm or leg.
  • Measure two different toys and say which one is longer.
  • Make a “measurement hunt” — find 5 things and measure them with your hand span.
  • Draw a picture of something and measure it with different units.
