Today we will learn:
• The names and values of Canadian coins
• How to recognize a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and loonie
• How to count coins
• Simple ways to make amounts up to 20 cents or more
• Why money is important in our daily life

1. Meet the Canadian Coins! 🪙

2. How Much is Each Coin? 💵

1 Penny = 1 cent 🪙

1 Nickel = 5 cents = 5 pennies 🪙

1 Dime = 10 cents = 2 nickels or 10 pennies 🪙

1 Quarter = 25 cents = 5 nickels or 2 dimes + 1 nickel 🪙

1 Loonie = 100 cents = 1 dollar! 🪙

3. Counting Coins - Let's Practice! 🧮

2 nickels = 5¢ + 5¢ = 10¢

1 dime + 1 nickel = 10¢ + 5¢ = 15¢

3 dimes = 10¢ + 10¢ + 10¢ = 30¢

1 quarter = 25¢

4 nickels = 20¢

4. Real Life Examples 🌍

You want to buy a sticker that costs 15 cents.
You have 1 dime and 1 nickel.
10¢ + 5¢ = 15¢ → Perfect! You can buy it! 🎉

Your mom gives you 2 quarters.
25¢ + 25¢ = 50¢ → You have fifty cents!

5. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Use real coins (or play money) to count different amounts.
  • Sort coins by type: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters.
  • Play “Shop” game: set prices and pay with coins.
  • Make a coin rubbing art with paper and crayons.
