Hello my wonderful Grade 1 superstars! ❤️

Today we will learn:
• Different ways to add and subtract (strategies)
• How to solve story problems
• Using pictures, fingers, and number lines
• Checking our answers and explaining our thinking
• Building confidence in math!

1. Addition Strategies ➕

Strategy 1: Count On
6 + 3 = ? Start at 6 and count on: 7, 8, 9 → 9

Strategy 2: Make 10
8 + 4 = ? 8 + 2 = 10, then +2 more = 12 (but we stop at 10 for now)

Strategy 3: Use Doubles
5 + 5 = 10 (double five!)
4 + 4 = 8

2. Subtraction Strategies ➖

Strategy 1: Count Back
9 - 3 = ? Start at 9 and count back: 8, 7, 6 → 6

Strategy 2: Take Away
You have 7 apples. You eat 2. How many left?
7 - 2 = 5

Strategy 3: Think Addition
10 - 6 = ? What plus 6 makes 10? → 4 + 6 = 10, so 10 - 6 = 4

3. Story Problems (Word Problems) 📖

Story 1: You have 5 balloons. Your friend gives you 4 more balloons.
How many balloons do you have now?
5 + 4 = 9 balloons! 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈

Story 2: There are 10 cookies on the plate. You eat 3 cookies.
How many cookies are left?
10 - 3 = 7 cookies left! 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

Story 3: Sam has 8 toy cars. He gives 2 cars to his sister.
How many toy cars does Sam have now?
8 - 2 = 6 toy cars left.

4. Using Tools to Help 🛠️

  • Fingers: Show the starting number, then add or take away.
  • Pictures: Draw dots or objects and count them.
  • Number Line: Jump forward for addition, backward for subtraction.
  • Objects: Use blocks, counters, or snacks to act out the problem.

5. Checking Our Answers ✅

Good mathematicians always check!

After adding: “Does my answer make sense? Is it bigger than the starting number?”
After subtracting: “Does my answer make sense? Is it smaller than the starting number?”

You can also use the opposite operation to check!

6. Fun Activities to Practice 🎲

  • Act out story problems with toys or snacks.
  • Draw your own addition and subtraction stories.
  • Play “Math Detective” — solve mystery story problems.
  • Use a number line on the floor and jump for each problem.
  • Make a poster showing your favourite strategies.
  • Teach a family member how to solve a story problem.
